About Our Practice

A Person-Centred Approach

How Person-Centred Therapy works…

When attending counselling sessions, you will be encouraged to bring your own present-moment issues to each session; the counselling direction is led by you and not directed by the counsellor, prizing your autonomy as an individual. Our work together can be short or long-term, depending on your needs, you can decide what works best for you.

Person-centred therapy is a humanistic approach based on the understanding that, given the right conditions, a person can reach their full potential and become their true self, which is termed ‘self-actualisation’. This actualisation process is innate and accessible to everyone.

To help support you in exploring personal issues, we as person-centred therapists will offer:

  • Unconditional Positive Regard (UPR) – accepting and valuing you.
  • Congruence – being honest and transparent in how we experience you and your world.
  • Empathic understanding – seeing your viewpoint as if we were you.

You will not be judged, whatever you bring to each session will be warmly welcomed.

This non-judgmental environment builds a trusting therapeutic relationship in which you can feel free and supported to bring forward whatever is troubling you. This will support you in discovering your own abilities and autonomy in coping with present and future life issues and experiences.

Your therapist will help you explore your issues, feelings, beliefs, behaviour, and worldview so you can become more self-aware and achieve greater independence. It will enable you to better understand the expectations and values others and society have placed on you and return closer to your own personal values and beliefs.

We will help you to increase awareness in resources that are available to you that can be drawn upon to work through personal issues, build your self-confidence and to support your wellbeing. We will treat you as the expert on yourself, as no one else knows exactly what it’s like to be you.
